Amarone della Valpolicella: A Love Letter in a Wine Bottle

December 08, 20253 min read

The heart of Valpolicella and the timeless art of crafting Italy’s most fascinating wine

There are wines you simply drink — and then there are wines you remember. Amarone della Valpolicella is one of those unforgettable experiences: a wine that brings together centuries of tradition, the soul of a land, and passion that refuses to be rushed.

For me, Amarone is more than a prestigious red — it’s a symbol of the Veneto region itself. It reflects the elegance of Venice, the historic queen of the seas, and the romance of Verona, the city where love became legend. Amarone holds all this inside the glass: strength, beauty, and emotion.

A Craft Rooted in Time

Amarone stands apart because of the way it begins. Only the best bunches from the hills of Valpolicella are chosen, and instead of going straight into winemaking, they rest — patiently.

The traditional appassimento method is at the heart of Amarone’s greatness. After harvest, the grapes are placed in ventilated rooms called fruttai, where winter air slowly dehydrates them. This natural drying concentrates aromas, sugars, and structure. Long before fermentation starts, the wine is already rich with personality.

This is Amarone’s magic:
a wine shaped by patience, transformed by time.

Corte del Sole Montetondo: The Amarone We Are Proud to Represent

At Grappolo Wine Shop, we select wines not just for quality, but for the stories and people behind them. That’s why I’m proud to represent Corte del Sole Montetondo, a family-run estate in Valpolicella that honors every step of the Amarone tradition.

Their winemaking journey begins each February, with meticulous selection of the finest grapes destined for Amarone. These grapes are gently dried in the fruttai, concentrating everything that nature has given them.

Then comes the transformation:

  • 25 days of fermentation with extended skin contact
→ extracting vibrant color, rich tannins, and intense aromas

  • 40 months of aging in barriques
→ embracing time to build elegance, complexity, and depth

What emerges from this long, deliberate process is a wine with a powerful soul and refined beauty — exactly what Amarone should be.

The Experience in Your Glass

Color
Deep ruby red that grows darker and more intriguing as the wine ages.

Aromas
An intense bouquet of juicy cherries and dried plums, lifted by dried flowers and delicate sweet spices — a fragrance you want to pause and enjoy before the first sip.

Taste
Smooth, full-bodied, and layered. Silky tannins give structure, while a lively acidity keeps it fresh and perfectly balanced. The finish is long and persistent — a moment that continues even after the glass leaves your lips.

A Wine Made for Exceptional Moments

Amarone elevates a meal like few wines can. It’s the ideal partner for:

  • braised lamb or roasted game

  • truffle risotto

  • rich slow-cooked dishes

  • aged cheeses after dinner

When you open this bottle, you’re not simply serving wine —
you’re creating a celebration.

A Tribute to the Land We Love

Corte del Sole Montetondo’s Amarone is a bridge between past and present — a wine made with ancestral expertise and modern dedication. Every bottle is a tribute to Valpolicella, to Veneto, and to the art of doing things the right way: with patience, pride, and passion.

As someone who has devoted his career to bringing Italy’s authentic wines to your table, it is an honor for me to share this Amarone with you.

One taste… and you’ll understand why this wine has become a legend.
