Calabria: The Region That Will Always Have a Special Place in My Heart

As an Italian winemaker, people often ask me which region of Italy is my favorite.

The truth is, that's an impossible question to answer.

Italy is made up of 20 incredible wine regions, each with its own history, traditions, native grapes, and way of life. Every time I travel through one of them, I discover something new that makes me fall in love with my country all over again.

But today, I want to talk about Calabria.

Not just because it produces fantastic wines, but because my mother is from Calabria.

In Italy, we have a saying: "La mamma è sempre la mamma." There isn't a perfect English translation, but it means that your mother will always be your mother—there is simply no one who can ever replace her. It's a phrase every Italian grows up hearing, and it's our way of expressing the deep respect and love we have for our mothers.

So, as someone whose roots come from both Campania and Calabria, I simply couldn't build a portfolio of authentic Italian wines without dedicating a special place to this extraordinary region.

Italy's Wild Southern Paradise

Calabria sits at the very tip of Italy's famous boot, surrounded by the Ionian Sea on one side and the Tyrrhenian Sea on the other.

It's one of Italy's most untouched regions.

Towering mountains rise almost directly from crystal-clear water. Hidden beaches sit below dramatic cliffs. Ancient villages seem frozen in time. Roads wind through forests, olive groves, vineyards, and small family farms where traditions haven't changed for generations.

This isn't the Italy of luxury shopping or crowded tourist attractions.

This is authentic Italy. Many Italians consider Calabria one of the country's last true hidden gems.

Where Greek History Meets Italian Passion

Long before Italy even existed as a nation, Calabria was part of Magna Graecia, where ancient Greek settlers established some of the most important colonies in the Mediterranean.

The Greeks didn't just bring philosophy and architecture—they brought wine.

For thousands of years, vineyards have covered these hills, and many of today's native grape varieties are descendants of those ancient vines.

When you drink a Calabrian wine, you're tasting a tradition that has survived wars, empires, and centuries of history.

That's something I always find fascinating as a winemaker.

The "Mexico of Italy"

Whenever I teach one of our wine classes, I like to joke that Calabria is the Mexico of Italy.

Not because the cultures are similar—but because Calabrians absolutely love spicy food.

The famous Calabrian chili peppers have become popular all over the world for their balance of heat, fruit, and smoky flavor.

But the region offers so much more.

Creamy spicy 'Nduja, sweet Tropea onions, handmade pasta with chickpeas, fresh seafood, incredible olive oil, citrus fruits, mountain herbs, and vegetables grown under the Mediterranean sun.

Like the people themselves, the food is bold, generous, and full of personality.

Wines That Deserve More Attention

One thing I've always believed is that some of Italy's greatest wines are still waiting to be discovered.

Calabria is one of those places.

The region is home to more than 200 native grape varieties, many found nowhere else in the world.

For red wines, you'll discover grapes like Gaglioppo and Magliocco, producing elegant Mediterranean wines with vibrant cherry fruit, herbs, spice, and refreshing acidity.

The white wines are equally exciting.

Native varieties such as Greco Bianco, Mantonico, and Timpa Grosso create wines that combine ripe fruit with freshness thanks to the cooling influence of the two surrounding seas.

These aren't wines trying to imitate anyone else. They're proudly Calabrian.

My Summer Recommendation: Madama Giovanna

If there is one bottle that perfectly captures Calabria in a glass, it's Madama Giovanna.

Made from the native Greco Bianco grape, it has become one of my favorite white wines to enjoy during the Texas summer.

We recently served it during an event at the Ferrari Art Gallery, and it quickly became one of the stars of the evening. Bottle after bottle disappeared as guests kept coming back for another glass.

The aromas immediately remind me of Southern Italy.

Imagine ripe tropical fruits, bright citrus, and delicate Mediterranean freshness.

On the palate, it's fuller than many people expect from an Italian white wine, giving it wonderful texture and richness, while a lively streak of acidity keeps everything balanced, refreshing, and incredibly easy to drink.

It's exactly the kind of wine I reach for when sitting outside with friends, enjoying an aperitivo before dinner, relaxing by the pool, or pairing it with fresh seafood on a warm Texas evening.

Every bottle reminds me not only of Calabria's extraordinary landscape but also of the family roots that connect me to this beautiful region.

And maybe that's why sharing these wines means so much to me.

Because every bottle we bring to America isn't just another wine.

It's a little piece of home.
