Rosato: not just a color… it’s a way of living wine
Rosato with Soul: Italy’s Pink Wines, the Way They’re Meant to Be
Ciao Ragazzi,
today I want to talk to you about a wine that’s often underestimated… but every year manages to surprise me more and more: rosato.
And yes, I call it rosato, not just rosé. Because in Italy, it’s not just a style… it’s personality.
Let me be honest with you: for years, the wine world has told the story of pink wine with a French accent. Provence this, Provence that always pale, always delicate, always “perfect.” Beautiful, of course. But Italian rosato? That’s a different story. It’s more expressive, more food-driven, more alive.
Rosato is not a middle ground
Let’s clear something up right away, like I would if we were sharing a glass together: Rosato is not a compromise between red and white wine.
It’s a decision. It’s that moment when you want freshness—but you also want structure. You want something easy to drink—but not simple. Something that speaks, not whispers.
How we give it life
Rosato is born from red grapes but treated with restraint and intention.
When I make rosato, I’m thinking about timing more than anything else. The skins of the grapes, the same ones that give red wine its deep color and tannin, touch the juice only briefly. Sometimes just a few hours. That’s it.
That small window is everything.
Too short, and the wine has no soul. Too long, and it loses its elegance.
This is where the winemaker really earns his keep.
In Italy, we don’t rush this moment, we respect it.
The Italian way: more than just pretty
What I love about Italian rosato is that it’s not made just to look good in a glass.
It’s made to be at the table.
Think about a Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, deeper in color, with cherry, orange peel, and a little wild edge. Or a rosato from Aglianico in the south, structured, almost serious, but still refreshing. Even in places known for big reds, like Piedmont, you’ll find rosati that surprise you with their balance and tension.
These wines have purpose.
They’re not just for the poolside, they’re for pasta, seafood, grilled meats, pizza… yes, even a proper four seasons pizza (trust me on that one).
Young, vibrant, and honest
Rosato is not a wine that waits for you. It lives in the moment.
Most rosati are meant to be enjoyed young—within a year or two of harvest—when their aromas are bright, their fruit is alive, and their energy is still dancing in the glass. This is part of their beauty. No pretending, no hiding behind time. Just pure expression.
My advice to you
Don’t overthink rosato.
Chill it slightly (not ice cold—let it breathe a little), pour a generous glass, and open it with food and friends.
And next time you reach for a rosé… try going Italian.
You might find something with a little more soul.
A presto,
Aldo
A final thought (and a little invitation)

If there’s one thing I’d love for you to take away, it’s this:
real rosato is not sweet, it’s not a fruit punch, and it’s definitely not just a summer trend.
It’s balanced, dry, food-friendly—and when it’s done right, it can be one of the most versatile wines on the table.
That’s exactly why we’ve put together something special for you.
A curated bundle of 6 Italian rosati from 3 different regions, each one chosen to show a different expression of what rosato can be. From lighter and more delicate to deeper and more structured, this selection is meant to give you a clear, honest picture of what quality rosato should taste like.
Not candy. Not juice.
Real wine.
If you’re ready to discover rosato the right way… this is where I’d start.

That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking about as we prepare for the
Above Wines Expo 2026
For me, it’s not just another event.
It’s a way to bring all of this, these places, these producers, these stories—into one room here in Texas. To let people taste what I’ve tasted, and maybe see Italian wine a little differently after. If you’ve ever been curious to go beyond the usual bottles…
this is where it starts.

Tonight, I’ll probably open something simple. Maybe from the south.
Something that reminds me why I started doing this in the first place.
